Thanks, Persnickety Rich People!

February 2, 2008

Here’s a big shout-out to rich people who order gorgeous custom windows and then decide they don’t want them. Another shout-out goes to rich people who buy lovely homes and insist on tearing out fantastic high-end windows because they want to do their own thing.

Builder Scott has been working with his guy Larry at the window place. (I originally had the name of the window place in this space, but Scott thinks if everyone knows his secret sources, they will all be calling asking for leftovers and there won’t be anything left for him to pick from in the future.) Yes, they have “state of the art showrooms with full-sized displays featuring the most current and innovative quality windows, doors, accessories and options”. We want a lot of windows for the Industrial Cottage. We want some really big ones. And those babies are obscenely expensive. As mentioned previously, our budget is miniscule. We’ve budgeted $9000 for windows. Some of those big ones cost over $2000 each.

So the biggest shout-out of all goes to Builder Scott, who simply asked Larry, “What do you have that’s left over?” And Larry was happy to share that they have warehouses in Charlottesville and Charlotte that are full of cast-offs from persnickety rich people that he’d love to unload. So far, we’re getting over $20,000 worth of windows for about $8200. I haven’t actually seen them, but Scott’s just about swooning, which is quite amusing to see.

Carla,

Everyone who’s seen what’s happening in the backyard is now talking to me about getting Builder Scott to do something for them. Like I’m his agent or something.

You will have to come to the open house when The Industrial Cottage is finished!

Debra -

You have the best building material karma I know.  As we were out pricing replacement windows for our home this weekend, I understand the $s involved with windows.

May they be more than you can ever dream of!

Well, it’s not so much ME, it has a lot more to do with the ingenuity of Builder Scott.

However, I was at a dinner party the other night and met someone who is a furniture builder and he told me they have a couple of trailers full of fancy custom cabinetry that persnickety rich people changed their minds about, so we’ll definitely be all over that in the near future!

I have run across this as an installer in the past when I was a subcontractor. I actually built a home, though not as large as the pic in the post, in the past.

It was mostly built with materials that were soon to be thrown into the local landfill. So I also thank the snooty rich also. Nice post on how you can save big and also remain green at the same time! What a combination.
